WALK FROM WRAGBY
Thursday 31st
March 2011
Following
persistent rain overnight and early morning, the weather improved by the
start of the walk to give a fine, warm, completely dry day with sunny
periods, although it did become very windy.
Setting off from Wragby Market Place at 10 am, the
group of 15 walkers began the 10 mile walk. Our route took us past the
Wragby Moats and on beside Badgermoor Wood and Ash Holt to reach the
village of Langton by Wragby, birthplace of former Archbishop of
Canterbury, Stephen Langton.
From
Langton by Wragby church we headed south to Hoop Lane and then west
through Firs Farm, past Hallbush Wood to Little Langley and the B1202.
Taking the footpath past Goltho Grange we then turned right at the next
footpath junction to pass through the corner of Black Plantation to
reach a minor road from where we entered the Forestry Commission
woodland known as West Wood. Turning right after 275 metres, we followed
a path out of West Wood to enter Goltho Wood. In the relative shelter of
the Great West Wood we stopped for lunch.
Goltho
Wood is a newly planted Woodland Trust wood extending north from the
Great West Wood all the way to the A158 with an extensive network of
permissive paths. Heading north through Goltho Wood, we made our way to
the impressive picnic table and sculpture where we stopped for a group
photograph. We then completed a circuit around the northern portion of
the woodland before exiting on to the adjacent road.
Our
next destination was Goltho church, all that now remains of the medieval
village of Goltho where we stopped to read the information panel.
Proceeding south-east to reach a minor road, we passed Shepherd's Farm
and then turned left on to the roadside path alongside the B1202 to
return to Wragby which we reached at 2.50 pm.
